Dear NYSASA Colleagues:

On behalf of the members of the NYS Association of School Attorneys, welcome to our website. I hope that since you are visiting our site, you’re curious about who we are, what we do, and whether this is an organization that you might want to become involved with. As someone who has been connected to NYSASA for the last 15 years, I can say that my membership has enriched my professional life immeasurably.

For over fifty years, NYSASA has served as an association dedicated exclusively to school attorneys. Our members serve as legal counsel to boards of education and school districts across the State. Our mission is to support New York schools by supporting the attorneys who represent them. We help school attorneys provide their clients with the highest quality legal representation.

We do this in a number of ways. First, we offer continuing legal education opportunities specific to the practice of school law. For example, in early June 2017, we will once again host our annual School Law Seminar at the Sagamore Hotel in Lake George. This Seminar focuses on the latest information on current school law topics, but also gives us all a chance to connect with colleagues from around the State in a beautiful, relaxed setting. Our Seminar attendance grows every year as word-of-mouth spreads about this wonderful opportunity.

We will also once again co-sponsor, with the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA), the 21st Annual Pre-Convention School Law Seminar immediately prior to NYSSBA’s 98th Annual Convention & Education Expo. This October we will be in Lake Placid. This seminar is attended by many of our school board clients who enjoy seeing their attorneys there, taking part in the experience. Again this year we will feature prominent education law attorneys on both a state and a national level who will provide their insights on cutting edge legal issues.

If you have ever wondered how to get an article published in NYSSBA’s newspaper On Board, you’ve come to the right place. In partnership with NYSSBA, the NYSASA membership writes a monthly column on legal issues for the paper under the by-line of the attorney and his or her firm. This opportunity provides great exposure for the author(s). Our members-only ListServ gives members immediate access to school attorneys across the state when you are looking for feedback on that ever-elusive answer to a question of first impression.

NYSASA also serves as a knowledgeable and pragmatic resource for school boards and administrators, New York State government and the general public. Our Board of Directors has worked hard over the past years to create and maintain critical relationships with legislators, State Education Department officials and State-wide stakeholders to secure a place at the table where important decisions are made. This work has paid off, as NYSASA is called upon more and more frequently for input on emerging legal and policy issues. Just this past year, for example, NYSASA was instrumental in resolving questions about the authority of CPS to question students at school without parental consent. NYSASA’s involvement led to the promulgation of new emergency regulations by DOH that protected our districts and their students. We will continue to work to advance the school attorneys as essential members of the school community seeking solutions to the educational challenges faced by our clients.

I’m looking forward to this upcoming year and serving as NYSASA’s President. Thank you for your interest in our Association. If you are not yet a member, please join. I know you will find your involvement in NYSASA worthwhile, as NYSASA is truly unique among all other organizations in its focus on the practice of school law.
